Article: The warmth of the Andes

Make these days feel warmer with Sol Alpaca

The warmth of the Andes

Where you can look down over the world from the height of the clouds, many gifts from nature provide warmth. From the glimmering sun rays to warm, friendly people who openly share their kindness and gratitude with loved ones. In the Andes, keeping someone warm is a way to show you care, a tradition that has been perfected over thousands of years using one of the world's finest fibres: alpaca.

In 1922, Frank W. Michell, a young lieutenant in the Royal British Air Force, arrived in Peru hoping to get to know this mysterious new country first-hand. It didn’t take him long to fall in love with Peru and the Andes. That’s when he decided to dedicate his life to the alpaca and the impressive textile tradition practiced by the artisans of these lands. He made a commitment to keep the tradition alive and share it with the world. In 1931, he founded Michell & Cía., the first company to offer this noble fibre to the world, in a professional and sustainable manner.

Over the years, the cheerful, hardworking people of the Andes, have built a unique skillset, and have become experts at producing wonderful garments from alpaca wool—a soft, beautiful fibre that comes in 32 different natural shades. They also specialize in creating accessories, using a blend of techniques from past and present. And more importantly, they provide warmth, because if warmth is a gift from nature, then everyone has the right to feel it... and wear it.

Make these days feel warmer with Sol Alpaca

At SOL ALPACA we keep this time-honoured tradition alive today, by creating and producing the most beautiful clothing from one of the most sophisticated and exquisite fibres, obtained from an animal that has co-existed with the Andea people since the beginning of time: the alpaca. The alpaca is one of the most beautiful South American camelids. Related to the llama, guanaco and vicuña, alpacas have been prized for their fibre since Pre-Inca times due to the properties and quality of their hair. Today Michell & Company processes this fibre with passion, using state-of-the-art technology, all while respecting the animal and the environment.

Our collections offer designs that are lightweight and breathable—alpaca wool keeps the warmth in and the cold out. Wrap yourself in the luxury of our elegant coats, cozy sweaters and decorative throws. Enjoy pieces that embody warm traditional style with a modern twist. Now, we’d like to share this gift with you.
